The Oak Art Experience

Transforming dead oaks into LIVE ART!

Lakeland Academy is a school of arts and sciences promoting accelerated brain-based learning, environmental awareness and community service. Special programs include The Rain Barrel Project, organic gardening, Pioneer Day, Camp Soaring Eagle, and field trip opportunities for public and private schools. Therefore, when several large oak trees on our campus succumbed to the drought, the staff came up with yet another innovative idea. Transform dead trees into live art! Doug Moreland, Austin chainsaw artist created the wonderful pieces of art that are pictured above.

The initial sculptures were finished in November 2008 and opportunities still exist for individuals and corporations to sponsor future sculpting that will create the largest permanent chainsaw sculpture garden in Texas.

Lakeland Academy plans to be a leader of “green” campus development in Texas with L.E.E.D. certified and chemical free environments.  The Rain Barrel Project and organic gardening are examples of conservation programs in which Lakeland students are actively involved.
